Diary, 1849.

Beekley's diary for 1849 indicates that he enjoyed a very active social life in Philadelphia, including frequent attendance at lectures, orchestral and band concerts, operas, theaters, private parties, and museum exhibits. He became a member of the Franklin Institute, played the violin, visited and commented on Episcopal and Roman Catholic churches, and rendered opinions on all concert and theatrical performances he attended. Beekley also wrote of an outbreak of cholera in the city and a riot that erupted in South Philadelphia in October between the "Killers and the colored people." There are several references to book-reading and to helping a female friend catalogue books for the Apprentices' Library.
